FEU ousts Ateneo in 5 | inquirer.net

MANILA, Philippines—Cherry Ann Vivas took charge in the fifth set as the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws hacked out a pulsating 25-12, 22-25, 25-27, 25-19, 15-9 triumph over the Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles Sunday night in their knockout match for a semifinal berth at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.

Vivas, the league’s leading scorer, finished with 25 points, including four in the final set as the Lady Tamaraws forged a best-of-three semifinal duel with the University of Santo Tomas Tigresses starting Tuesday.

Defending champion San Sebastian College tackles Adamson University in the other semifinal pairing.

“Her skills are improving that’s why we wanted her to take charge in the fifth set,” said FEU coach Ernesto Pamilar, whose squad entered the semifinal round for the second straight conference.

With Ateneo unable to consistently produce quality attacks because of its poor receptions, the Lady Tamaraws pulled away for a 10-3 advantage in the deciding set.

The Lady Eagles managed to trim the gap to two twice, the last at 9-11 on Mary Rose Cabanag’s attacking error, before their mediocre floor defense did them in again.

Cabanag, who chipped in six points, made amends with a service ace that put the Lady Tamaraws at match point, then Rachel Ann Daquis scored on a smash to wrap up the victory in an hour and 56 minutes.

Daquis, who anchored the Lady Tamaraws’ defense at the backline in the final set, still finished with 20 points. Shaira Gonzales contributed 22 points on 19 attacks.

Pamilar attributed the victory to a defensive adjustment in the fifth set, where he put emphasis on blocking and left just three players on the backline to cover.

“We were able to cover the angles of their attack,” said Pamilar, whose team had a 72-51 edge on attack points.

The Lady Tamaraws breezed through the opening set, winning it in just 17 minutes.

But the Lady Eagles, who were coming off a morale-boosting five-set conquest of University of Santo Tomas, leaned on their superior blocking to take the next two frames.

6 p.m. — UST vs San Sebastian

Unheralded teams Ateneo and Adamson scored a pair of upsets on Sunday as the quarterfinals of the 6th Shakey’s V-League Second Conference unfurled at The Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Eagles, behind the efforts of Fille Cainglet, Angeline Gervacio and guest player Charo Soriano, stunned second-running Far Eastern University, 25-16, 26-24, 24-26, 25-14, while the Lady Falcons made short work of San Sebastian, 25-15, 25-13, 25-12.

Pau Soriano and Angela Benting each scored 15 points while Gill Justillo added 13 as Adamson improved to an even 4-4 card after blasting the five-time reigning NCAA champions in just 54 minutes.

“It’s anybody’s game pagdating dito sa quarterfinals. Kulang pa siguro ang laro namin pero kaya pa naming magimprove,” said Lady Falcons coach Dulce Pante, whose team forced San Sebastian into a tie for third place with Ateneo at 5-3.

No Lady Stag scored in double figures with Princess Elaine Cruz leading the way with just five points as coach Roger Gorayeb opted to use his reserves for most of the last two sets.

Adamson breezed through in the second set when it zoomed to a 7-0 start before taking a commanding 15-2 advantage.

The Lady Eagles drew confidence from their impressive victory over Adamson last Thursday.

“Nakakuha kami ng kumpiyansa mula sa panalo namin sa Adamson kaya nadala namin yun dito sa game na ‘to,” said coach Clint Malazo, whose team improved to a 5-3 record for fourth spot.

V-League: AdU takes 3rd place; Balse wins MVP plum | gmanews.tv

MANILA, Philippines - Adamson played with so much poise in three gut-wrenching sets for a 27-25, 25-23, 25-23 victory over Far Eastern U, clinching third place honors in the sixth Shakey’s V-League presented by Cherifer before a packed Sunday crowd at The Arena in San Juan.

Nerissa Bautista and Paulina Soriano fired 14 hits apiece while Jill Gustilo added 10 as the Lady Falcons survived an extended first-set encounter, 15 deadlocks in the second frame and another cliffhanger in the third to complete the hard-earned sweep of the Lady Tams in their own best-of-three series.

The San Marcelino-based squad thus settled for the bronze medal in the conference it ruled last year while the Lady Tams, led by Mayette Carolino’s 18 and Maica Morada’s 10 points, posted their best-ever finish in the league.

Meanwhile, UST ace Mary Jean Balse became the league’s first two-time MVP when she bagged the coveted individual crown during the rites honoring the conference’s top performers.

Balse, who also copped the MVP Plum in 2004 while powering UST to three titles, edged fancied San Sebastian guest import Jaroensri Bualee for top honors.

Bualee was named the league’s best scorer while Laurence Ann Latigay of SSC and UST’s Aiza Maiza took the best attacker and best blocker titles, respectively.

Other individual awardees were Morada (best server), Adamson’s libero Lizlee Ann Gata (best digger), Rhea Dimaculangan of UST (best setter), and San Sebastian’s Marge Pepito (best receiver) and Shaira Gonzalez of FEU (most improved player). – Perry Legaspi, GMANews.TV

FEU shackles UST, ties V-League semis series | gmanews.tv

MANILA, Philippines - Far Eastern University surprised University of Santo Tomas with a 25-16, 25-23, 25-21, 25-23 triumph to even their best-of-3 semifinal series in the Shakey’s V-League Season 6 and force a winner-take-all match for a finals spot.

Rachel Ann Daquis tormented UST with 16 points powered by 13 spikes Sunday at The Arena in San Juan to help FEU revive its hopes of playing in the finals.

Game 3 is set on Tuesday, with both teams going for finals berth.

The Lady Tams also leaned on Cherry Mae Vivas and Irish May Morada, who scored 12 and 11 points respectively, in downing the Tigresses who were favored to sweep the series after finishing the elimination on top of the standings and sweeping the quarterfinals.

Mayeth Carolino, guest player Rubie de Leon and Shaira Gonzalez combined for 23 points in upsetting the Tigresses who are gunning for their sixth straight win.

San Sebastian College and Adamson University were contesting the other finals berth with the Lady Stags leading their own semis series, 1-0.

UST took the first set and was actually on its way to securing the second set, but the Tigresses were stopped by FEU’s all-around defense.

It was the same in the third set with the Lady Tams choking the Tigresses with their stiff defense on the net and on the floor, ending the match in one hour and 38 minutes.

Guest player Mary Jean Balse paced the Tigresses with her 22 points, while Bernice Abigail Co, Aiza Maizo, Maika Angela Ortiz all contributed double digit productions. - Perry Legaspi, GMANews.TV

UST, SSC-R belles take Game 1 | Inquirer.net

The top-ranked University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Tigresses and the San Sebastian College-Recoletos (SSC-R) Lady Stags drew first blood as they toppled their respective opponents in Game 1 of the best-of-three semifinals series of th e 6th Shakey’s V-League yesterday at the Arena in San Juan City.

The Lady Stags made short work of the defending champions Adamson University Lady Falcons with a 25-14, 25-20, 25-18 victory to move to within a win away from the Finals.

Likewise, the Tigresses showed their championship poise as they needed an extra set to defeat the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws, 25-14, 25-23, 22-25, 25-18.

San Sebastian took full advantage of the absence of Adamson’s vaunted imports and rode the game-long brillaince of Thai import Jaroensli Bualee, Laurence An Latigas and Rysabelle Devenadera to down the Lady Falcons.

The defending champion Lady Falcons, who blasted the FEU Lady Tams to arrange a semis duel with the Stags, played without reigning MVP Nerissa Bautista and fellow guest player Joanna Botor-Carpio, who had to leave for a commitment to play an international beach volley tournament in Vietnam with UST reinforcement Michelle Carolino.

On the other hand, UST had no problem coping with the absence of Carolino as they got 21 points from skipper Aiza Maizo. Mary Jean Balse had 20 and Maika Ortiz scored 12 while Rhea Dimaculangan stepped up to likewise fire 12 hits for the Tigresses

Shaira Gonzalez, Irish Morada and Cherry Vivas scored 11 hits apiece as the Lady Tams hung on with a third set win but failed to stop the Tigresses’ fourth-set romp.
